I know rumours of an Australian iTunes store have been around for ages, but it looks like in the past week, Apple has registered itunes.com.au
Domain Name: itunes.com.au
Last Modified: 23-Mar-2005 22
Registrar ID: R00010-AR
Registrar Name: Melbourne IT
Status: OK
Registrant: APPLE COMPUTER AUSTRALIA PTY LTD
Registrant ID: ACN 002 510 054
No web site responding as yet.
Maybe related to this story? I’m surprised they haven’t just grabbed the lot.

Yeah, perhaps they’re planning ahead. For instance, amazon grabbed amazon.com.au in anticipation of a later local expansion.
Though keep in mind that in AU you can’t buy a .com.au domain unless you own the matching registered business name or company name. So it’s not like anybody could have come along and grabbed itunes.com.au and squatted on it.
Intriguingly, I notice someone bought google.net.au. Now there’s a lawsuit waiting to happen.
