Changing the default “Search For” engine in Firefox

As a follow up to Daniel’s previous post. If you want to change the default browser search engine in Firefox (say from .co.uk to com.au after you’ve installed the ‘proper’ English version of Firefox) it’s a simple procedure.

Type about:config in the address bar.
Scroll down the list to browser.search.default.url.
Double click on this and change .co.uk to com.au – you’re done. All your browser searches will now run through the Australian version of Google, with correct spelling.

And if you want to remove/add/edit the search options in Mycroft (the search box at the top of the screen) there’s a great free utility at http://www.svenbader.de/e_index.html

Billy Bragg And The MP3 Revolution

At last a performer who understands the new way of the music world.

Billy Bragg has released his latest live recording exclusively as an MP3 download. For AUD$17 you purchase the 150MB zip file direct from the artist. It’s 33 MP3 files, encoded at 190kbs. The killer is that there is no DRM on the files – you can do with them what you want for as long as you want as many times as you want. I’ve got them on my PC, put them on my iPod and burnt a CD for Rae to listen to in her car. I didn’t have to go to the shops nor did I have to wait for a sliver of plastic in the mail.

When is everyone else going to understand this?

Things Daniel Needs To Know

Daniel has gone and got himself and iPod. Fellow podders, what does Daniel need to know?

Let me kick this off.

  • I find it quicker to rip the CDs without the pod connected. They fly across pretty quickly over a USB2 connection.
  • iPod Agent – is a great tool for getting non-music content on to your pod.
  • 750 Free MP3s – Come And Get It

You’ve got your fast net connection, you’ve got your torrent client, you’ve got you iPod with over 20G still free and you’re thinking it would be really cool to get 750 free MP3s to help fill it up a little.

    Well, I can help you.

The South by South West festival have put together a 2.6G bittorrent of 750 artists associated with the festival and it’s free to all comers.

Check : http://2005.sxsw.com/geekout/fest4pod/ and don’t miss the 20 additional songs beneath the main link to take your swag to 770.

    Samsung, Impress Me

This afternoon I had a minor disaster. One minute my 13 month old Samsung monitor was working, the next it was just a blob of green on the screen. I bundled it in to the car and took it down to the local PC shop where I purchased it, Standard Computers on Millers Rd (who are excellent in the prompt way they have a look and let you know what’s going on, all with no charge) and they assured me the LCD panel was fine, it was most likely the electronics and they are covered by a 3 year warranty.

Now, Samsung, you’ve started behind the pack ’cause your call centre closes at 5:00 PM, which is a ridiculously early time this day and age, and I wanted to call you at 5:15 so let’s see how you can win me back tomorrow morning. I’m not impressed my fairly recent monitor can just stop working, you’ve got a job ahead of you to make me buy Samsung again.

    UPDATE

    Wow.

I’m impressed and probably a Samsung customer for life now.

They are giving me a brand new monitor. A better monitor than I bought 13 months ago, and within 48 business hours (although with a long weekend this makes it a bit longer, why didn’t it fritz two days ago!). The company dealing with it will come to my house, I hand over my old monitor, they give me a new one. No fuss, no being made to jump through hoops.

Well done Samsung, you’ve got a convert.

    Westpac, Use Someone’s Brain.

The Westpac banking site is down at the moment, fair enough these things happen. But is there any reason I have to attempt a login before I’m redirected to a notice telling me that banking is not available?

Here’s a hint Westpac – don’t waste your customer’s time. If online banking isn’t working tell us where we try to login.

    F1 iTrip

Driving to work yesterday my iTrip suddenly stopped working. Where there should have been The Podcast Network‘s The Jazz Show was static, and screeching. When I paused the show there was a high pitched tone. It lasted all the way from half way up the bridge, down by Albert Park Lake to Malvern.

It wasn’t until I was driving home that the solution presented itself.

The Australian Grand Prix is on at Albert Park Lake and they have set up a temporary FM radio station for attendees.

So, if your iTrip is tuned to around the 91.5 mark and you are travelling through inner city Melbourne over the next few days you may wish to dig out the iTrip CD you never thought you’d use again and reconfigure your pod or you can download your iTrip software from the Griffin Technology site.

There Must Be A Way To Blame This On Microsoft

A while back I was moaning about how I couldn’t get my iPod to function on my PC, it refused to work with any USB 2 port and I had to resort to the incredibly slow USB 1. So instead of one hour of importing it took me a couple of weekends to get my 4500+ songs on.

So, to recap, I had plugged my iPod in to my USB card before and it didn’t work.

Last night I plugged my iPod in to a USB 2 hub connected to the same card and it worked perfectly.

I’m sure Microsoft must be to blame here somewhere but until I figure out where I’m going to blame it on Apple.

    Firefox, RSS & Newsgator

Seth Godin points out how Firefox makes it easy to work with RSS. An even better application of this idea is to combine it with the fantastic free online RSS feed tracker/news aggregator, Newsgator.

Newsgator manages your feeds online and offers a ‘Subscribe in NewsGator Online‘ bookmarklet so whenever you see the radar image on a page you want to track, click the bookmarklet and it’s automatically added to your Newsgator account. Now you don’t need to clutter up your bookmarks/favourites – just visit NewsGator to check all your feeds at once. Or you could set an ActiveWord to take you there.

What’s that? You don’t know what ActiveWords is? Stay tuned. Or better yet, download the 60 day free trial of ActiveWords (go for Active Words Plus to get the scripting engine) now. Tell Buzz that Tony Malloy sent you.
